Electric charge is the physical property of matter that causes it to experience a force when placed in an electromagnetic field. Electric charge can be positive or negative. Like charges repel each other and unlike charges attract each other. An object with no net charge is referred to as electrically neutral. Early knowledge of how charged substances interact is now called classical electrodynamics, and is still accurate for problems that do not require consideration of quantum effects.

वैद्युतिक आवेश पदार्थ का वह भौतिक गुण है जो पदार्थ को विद्युच्चुम्बकीय क्षेत्र में रखे जाने पर एक बल का अनुभव करने का कारण बनता है। वैद्युतिक आवेश धनात्मक या ऋणात्मक हो सकता है । समान आवेश एक दूसरे को विकर्षित करते हैं तथा भिन्न आवेश एक दूसरे को आकर्षित करते हैं। निवल आवेश की अनुपस्थिति वाली वस्तु को तटस्थ कहा जाता है। आवेशित पदार्थ कैसे परस्पर क्रिया करते हैं, इसका प्रारम्भिक ज्ञान अब चिरसम्मत विद्युच्चुम्बकिकी कहा जाता है, और अभी भी उन समस्याओं के लिए सटीक है जिन्हें प्रमात्रा प्रभावों पर विचार करने की आवश्यकता नहीं है।
